NATIVE AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE

GRADES: HIGH SCHOOL

APPROXIMATE LENGTH OF TIME: 2--50 MINUTE SESSIONS

​

GOAL: The students will be able to assess and distinguish the differences between the Native American perspective and the American author's perpetuated "Myth of the Vanishing Race."

​

SUMMARY:

This lesson uses excerpts from the book An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States: For Young People to critically examine the Native American perspective of "The Myth of the Vanishing Race."

​

LEARNING TARGETS:

  • Students will produce a written report comparing and contrasting primary and secondary sources from American historical authors and Native American authors to understand that by not including marginalized voices in history the perpetuation of myths will continue.

  • After reading excerpts from Native Americans, students will be able to critically examine documents from the Native American perspective to compare and contrast against the American authors from the previous lesson "American Historical Authors."
